Turangi is full of beautiful places. Explore the trails and walks, relax at Tokannu hot pools or take some fly fishing lessons on the Tongariro River.

Skiing

 

New Zealand’s largest Ski Field.
Whakapapa on Mount Ruapehu is a 40 minute drive from The Birches.
Whakapapa is the on the northern side of Mt Ruapehu and is the largest ski area in New Zealand. It has an extensive learners area called Happy Valley, 30 intermediate level runs for boarders and skiers, plus 24 black and double black runs to challenge even the most experienced of skiers.
Turoa is about 70 minutes drive from The Birches and is accessed through Ohakune on the Southern side of the Mountain. Again there are numerous runs that cater for all levels. Being on the south side, Turoa is particularly suitable for spring skiing.

Alpine Walks & Tongariro Crossing

The Tongariro Crossing takes about 7–8 hours and hikers will cross between two active volcanoes of Tongariro National Park. The crossing is highly rated by tourists as amongst the 10 best in the world. The Tongariro Crossing is a spectacular adventure set in a pristine Alpine environment

Rafting

The Tongariro River is one of New Zealand’s most well-known rivers and is famed world-wide for it wonderful trout fishing. Framed by spectacular beech forests, the Tongariro River is a very special aquatic environment to experience. As well as the fabled fishing, the river also offers exciting rafting experiences to suit all levels of excitement and skill. There are two rafting companies in Turangi that you can book your trip with.

Biking

There are lots of biking trails in and around Turangi, in fact one starts at our doorstep! The Tongariro River Trail is achievable by most riders and it’s a lovely way to see the river and local countryside. If you need something a little more ragged the 42 traverse is only 40 minutes away by car.

Fishing

Everyone in Turangi has a favourite fishing pool, even if it’s just to sit by and watch the wonderful follow its path. Peter has his own favourite pool which he would be willing to share with you when you arrive. We can also advise the best fishing guides if you want to up and find special pools and rivers. Turangi is world wide known for the Trout Fishing Capital of the World!

Boating

Bring your boat to Turangi and take it out on Lake Taupo, where the pristine waters and the trout are eagerly waiting for you arrival! If you are not in to fishing then bring along a jet ski it’s just as much fun.

National Trout Centre

The Tongariro National Trout Centre is the ultimate experience for all those who love fishing for trout. See the trout in their natural environment – up close at the underwater viewing chamber. In the museum you can learn the history of trout in New Zealand and how we sustain our trout rivers with particular reference to the Taupo District. The collection of rods, reels and other fly fishing memorabilia is considered one of the finest in the world.
The recently opened Genesis Fresh Water Aquarium is the only one in New Zealand featuring seldom seen native fish. Visitors can also enjoy a walk alongside the picturesque Tongaririo River, feed the trout in the children’s fishing pond and enjoy the sound of native birds in their natural habitat.

Turangi Golf Club

Don’t be put off by the pond! The Turangi Golf Club is a beautiful 18 hole course that provides both a challenge for the lower handicap golfer and a pleasant golfing experience for the higher handicap golfer. Turangi Golf Course is gently undulating and the surrounding mountains provide a spectacular setting.
